SOLID GOLD: Nelson's Green Brier gleams golden at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition

Widely considered the world's most influential arbiter of top quality spirits, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition [SFWSC] has just concluded its 17th annual judging, in which some seriously precious metal was bestowed upon Nelson's Green Brier Distillery. The Nashville brand revived by descendents of America's foremost 19th-century whiskey producer received an exalted…

  • Double Gold Medal designation for the Belle Meade Madeira Cask Finish Bourbon
  • Gold Medal designation for the Belle Meade Cognac Cask Finish Bourbon

Over 2,100 spirits competed for top honors at the prestigious event this year, the biggest in the competition's history. The coveted Double Gold Medal, according to an SFWSC statement, "is awarded to the very few entries that receive Gold medal ratings by all members of the judging panel. These are among the finest products in the world."

The unanimously acclaimed Belle Meade Madeira Cask Finish Bourbon is the third release in the Nelson's Green Brier Special Cask Finish Series, a distinguished family of carefully crafted small batch Bourbons that have all been richly honored at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition:  in addition to the highest honors for its Madeira Cask Finish Bourbon, Belle Meade Cognac Cask Finish Bourbon, the second release in the series, won a Gold Medal in San Francisco this year; and the first release, Belle Meade Bourbon Sherry Cask Finish, was awarded a Double Gold in 2015. Classic Belle Meade Bourbon received a Double Gold designation in 2015, too, holding its own in company with its Special Cask Finish cousins.

Far from being weighed down by all this heavy metal, the Nelson brothers now at the helm of the enterprise established by their triple-great grandfather in the late 1800s might just have a golden touch.  Carrying the family legacy of excellence and innovation forward with youthful vigor, they are especially excited about the  next addition to their critically acclaimed range: Nelson's First 108, a faithful recreation of their ancestor's signature spirit, is scheduled for release on July 4th of this year.
